The Outernet Lantern is a [portable device](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garmin-inreach-messenger-plus) that can work anywhere -- even when it's offline. Outernet broadcasts up to 1GB of new data on a daily basis from a space satellite. Their content (news stories, educational material, videos, music and more) has only been accessible via satellite dishes -- which is where the Lantern comes in. Receiving data from space, the Internet stick can be used by people with a laptop or smartphone by turning on Lantern's [wifi hotspot](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/netgear-nighthawk-5g-m7). The device is also covered in [solar panels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/slim-solar) so it can charge without having to be plugged in. Similar to a radio, Lantern only receives the data Outernet chooses to broadcast instead of getting everything the Internet has to offer. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.3/10 - Popularity: 56% | Activity: 65% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: South America, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Offline Connectivity:** Opportunities to create solar powered devices that can connect to the internet even when offline. - **Data Broadcasting:** New technology that can broadcast select data from satellites to be accessed by devices even when there is no internet connection. - **Portable Connectivity:** Innovations in making portable devices that allow for internet connectivity without access to traditional internet providers. ### Where This Applies - **Energy:** Companies in the energy sector can capitalize on opportunities to create or invest in solar powered devices that provide offline internet connectivity. - **Technology:** The technology sector can develop new innovations in broadcasting select data to be accessed offline using portable and solar powered devices. - **Education:** Educational institutions can leverage this technology to provide educational content in areas with limited internet access or unreliable service. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Portable Satellite Internet Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/starlink-portability.md) - [Off-Grid Connectivity Dongles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orange-dongle.md) - [International Professional Hotspots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wifi-mobile-hotspot.md) - [Personal Internet Satellite Dishes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/starlink.md) - [Satellite-Connected Hotspots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glocalme-meowgo-g50-max.md) - [Portable Solar-Powered Lanterns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kuro-lantern.md) - [Off-Grid Satellite Connectivity Services](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/starlink-rv.md) - [5G-Connected Power Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nikota-meta2000.md) - [Power Outage-Ready Routers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/storm-ready-wifi.md)
