The 'OffSET Shed House' designed by Irving Smith Architects uses a shed-like, [industrial design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pattern-house) that is as visually appealing as it is adaptive. Built for a small family and located facing a [coastal surfing community](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ysg-byron-bay) north of Gisborne, New Zealand, the house was built on a strategy to "scale new form to its surrounds". The interconnected beach house is open and inviting in the summer, incorporating the outdoor elements with [large open windows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ocean-eye) bringing in circulation with informal housing boundaries. The winter sees a more internalized use while still capturing the light and warmth from the openings. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.6/10 - Popularity: 97% | Activity: 93% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Industrial Minimalism:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in designing buildings that mix industrial and minimalist design. - **Seasonal Adaptive Architecture:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in creating buildings that are designed to adapt to the changing seasons and surrounding environment. - **Interconnected Homes:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in designing homes that are interconnected and adaptable to different needs and seasons. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Architecture firms can incorporate industrial design principles and seasonal adaptivity in their designs. - **Construction:** Construction companies can specialize in building homes that are interconnected and adaptable to different needs and seasons. - **Real Estate:** Real estate developers can invest in building and selling homes that incorporate industrial minimalism and adaptive design for seasonal living. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Minimalist Beach House Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/1980s-beach-house.md) - [Modern Architectural Seaside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/strandhouse.md) - [Coastal Summer Calm Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hors.md) - [Coastal Island Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasparakisfriel.md) - [Light-Filled Open Beach Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/big-sky-beach-house.md) - [Relaxing Wooden Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/heatherhill-beach-house.md) - [Monolithic Sleek Summer Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vollerup-atrium.md) - [Simple Material Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/openfield-house.md) - [Boxy Shaped Beach Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/roman-izquierdo-bouldstridge.md)
