# Puddle-Proof Umbrellas The RainBender Inside-Out Umbrella Collects Dripping Water In a Cylinder By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2015-11-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insideout-umbrella References: [kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rainbender/rainbender-umbrella-contains-the-rain-so-you-stay) & [rainbender](http://rainbender.com/wordpress/) Inside-out umbrellas are usually not a good thing, because they're a sign that your umbrella has been defeated with a heavy gust of wind that has now rendered it unusable, unless you can struggle to coax it back into shape in the pouring rain. But the RainBender is a different matter -- this umbrella features an intentional inside-out design that helps avoid dripping and indoor puddles. The umbrella has flexible ribs that are connected to a pole, which in turn is situated inside a carbon fiber cylinder that forms a thick handle. The canopy can be pulled inside the cylinder, which then collects dripping rainwater. This inside-out umbrella uses smart design to overcome the age-old problem of drippy umbrellas. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 13% | Activity: 68% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Inside-out Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore other products or designs that can benefit from an inside-out design, providing new and improved functionalities. - **Water Collection:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create products or systems that collect rainwater or other types of water for various purposes, such as irrigation or recycling. - **Smart Umbrellas:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop umbrellas with built-in sensors or technologies that can enhance user experience, such as providing weather updates or tracking lost umbrellas. ### Where This Applies - **Outdoor Gear:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Introduce innovative products in the outdoor gear industry that solve common problems and offer unique features, targeting outdoor enthusiasts and professionals. - **Water Management:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Innovate in the water management industry by creating solutions that efficiently collect, store, and repurpose water from various sources, addressing environmental concerns and water scarcity. - **Smart Devices:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Merge smart technology with everyday objects like umbrellas to create a new market for tech-infused products that enhance convenience and offer added functionalities. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Space-Inspired Folding Umbrellas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bloombrella.md) - [Flying Umbrella Prototypes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flying-umbrella.md) - [Disappearing Umbrella Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coilo.md) - [Wall-Mounted Umbrella Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/umbrella-1.md) - [Rainwater Multifunctional Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/raindrop-1.md) - [Artful Sculptural Umbrella Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/inbetween-umbrella.md) - [Transforming Umbrella Stands](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/split-1.md) - [OLED Weather Umbrellas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ori-umbrella.md) - [Rainproof Wheelchair Shells](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mobidry.md)
