# Kickstand Cycle Security The In Passing Lock Makes Your Bike Unrideable to Thieves By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-09-30 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/in-passing-lock References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2013/09/30/simple-kinetics-and-a-lock/) There are two interesting ideas presented in the In Passing Lock, related to security and safety. Perhaps designer Chung Pei Cheng first worked to develop a convenient and innovative [bicycle lock](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bosch-battery-lock), and discovered that it could double as a very practical multitasking device. The bike lock remains fixed to your two-wheeler in the middle of the back hub, angled perpendicular to the road while you're riding and adjusting downwards once you've dismounted. Since it's longer than the radius of your wheel, the gadget props the tire up above the ground, and a broad base keeps it from toppling over. Where the spokes meet, you'll find the combination lock. What you'll also notice here on the In Passing Lock is a [pair of red safety lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radian-wingman). The designer aimed to take advantage of stored kinetic energy while in motion to power this set of electronic reflectors. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.5/10 - Popularity: 78% | Activity: 79% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) > [Transportation](https://www.trendhunter.com/transportation) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Multi-functional Locking Devices:** Opportunities for the development of locking devices with additional features for added convenience and practicality. - **Kinetic Energy-powered Technology:** Development of technology that utilizes kinetic energy from motion for energy-efficient devices. - **Integrated Safety Devices:** Opportunities for devices that integrate safety features for added protection during use. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Cycling Industry:** Innovations in locking devices and safety features for the cycling industry. - **Security Industry:** Development of innovative locking devices for added security in various industries. - **Technology Industry:** Opportunities for the development of energy-efficient devices utilizing kinetic energy in the technology industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Hidden Seat Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lockinvisible.md) - [Indestructible Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foldylock-forever.md) - [Discreet Connected Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laas-olock.md) - [Collapsible Ultra-Secure Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-lock.md) - [Slap-Band-Inspired Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/slapstick-smart-bicycle-lock.md) - [Helmet-Friendly Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/abus-combiflex-travelguard.md) - [Impenetrable Cyclist Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/litelok-x1.md) - [Bike Security-Enhancing Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gravity-wheelnutz.md) - [Real-Time Monitoring Bike Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elios-crossover-lock.md)
