A recent study has confirmed that female sharks can reproduce without the assistance of male sharks. A baby shark was born in a tank with three female sharks none of which had any contact with male sharks or over three years.

Implications - Part of the reason is because the female has the capability of fertilizing their own sperm. Therefore, the need to mate and create offspring with the opposite sex has become unnecessary and obsolete for this species. According to Wired Magazine, this is the first confirmed case of asexual reproduction among these sea creatures.
