# Time-Telling Lights The Illuminate Stand Pulls Double Duty as a Desk Lamp and Clock By Michael Hines | Published 2011-08-21 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/illuminate-stand References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2011/08/19/the-story-of-time-and-light/) The Illuminate Stand from designers Sang Hwa Lee and Jin Ho Kim is a conceptual lamp designed to both make light and tell the time. This lamp has a flat and flexible head designed to be rotated between the time-telling and light-providing functions of the lamp. When the head of the Illuminate Stand is facing flat, the lamp is in light mode and a ring of soft light shoots out from the lamp. The light is not very wide or bright, making the lamp ideal for reading or for illuminating the contents of a nightstand or end table. When the lamp's head is turned 90 degrees, it is in [clock mode](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/desk-clock-1) and the time is projected onto the wall from the Illuminate Stand's head. The clock has an ultra-minimalist face, with no numbers or even a second hand present. While telling the time on this lamp could be tough, I still love this lamp and its [multifunctional and modern design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tangent-lamp). Multifunctional lamps are always a win in my book. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.4/10 - Popularity: 70% | Activity: 84% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Multifunctional Lighting:** The trend of multifunctional lighting offers opportunities for creating innovative and versatile lamps that serve multiple purposes. - **Minimalist Clocks:** The trend of minimalist clocks presents opportunities for creating sleek and modern time-telling devices with minimalist designs. - **Flexible Design:** The trend of flexible design allows for the creation of lamps with adjustable heads that can be rotated for different functions. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Lighting Design:** The lighting design industry can explore innovative ways to combine lighting and time-telling functions in lamps, catering to consumers seeking multifunctional lighting solutions. - **Home Decor:** The home decor industry can incorporate minimalist clock designs into its products, offering stylish and simplistic time-telling options for consumers who value minimalist aesthetics. - **Product Design:** The product design industry can focus on developing flexible lamp designs that offer versatility and adaptability for different lighting and time-telling needs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dual-Purpose Camera-Like Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nostalgian-floor-lamp-clock.md) - [Nautically Themed Metallic Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/khonsu-clock-lamp.md) - [Multifunctional Desk Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-boring-lamp.md) - [Space-Saving Desk Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spacesaving-desk-lamp.md) - [Storage-Friendly Task Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/storage-lamp.md) - [Simplistic Angular Desktop Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/linear-table-lamp.md) - [Weighted Multi-Position Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-desk-lamp-design.md) - [Magnetic Document-Holding Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/holder-desk-lamp.md) - [Task-Managing Dynamic Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fall-lamp-concept.md)
