[IBM](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/memory-tape) is developing [next-generation communications technology](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highspeed-data-transmission), **[Green Optical Link](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hollowcore-fiber-optic)**, that uses light instead of wires to send information. The technology uses photons of light, rather than electrons, to transmit information at 8 trillion bits per second using power equivalent to that required by a single, 100-watt bulb. Both the speed and the power efficiency are equally impressive when compared to current technology. For commercialization, IBM is building compatible circuit boards, **Optocards**, which feature integrated "Optochips" and employ an array of low-loss polymer optical waveguides to conduct light between transmitters and receivers. The applications of such a system range from High-definition content everywhere to massive bandwidth for Supercomputing. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 12% | Activity: 47% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Inventions](https://www.trendhunter.com/inventions) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Green Optical Link Technology:** IBM's Green Optical Link Technology is a disruptive innovation opportunity for the telecommunications industry in bringing faster and more efficient communication technology. - **Optocards:** The development of Optocards as a circuit board featuring integrated Optochips and employing low-loss polymer optical waveguides to conduct light represents a disruptive innovation opportunity for the electronics industry. - **High-definition Content Everywhere:** The ability to download high-definition content almost instantly, made possible by IBM's Green Optical Link Technology, represents a disruptive innovation opportunity for the media and entertainment industry. ### Where This Applies - **Telecommunications Industry:** IBM's Green Optical Link Technology has the potential to disrupt the telecommunications industry by providing faster and more efficient communication technology. - **Electronics Industry:** The development of Optocards, featuring integrated Optochips and employing low-loss polymer optical waveguides, represents a disruptive innovation opportunity for the electronics industry. - **Media and Entertainment Industry:** The ability to download high-definition content almost instantly, made possible by IBM's Green Optical Link Technology, represents a disruptive innovation opportunity for the media and entertainment industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Breakneck Wireless Connection Technologies](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/connection-technology.md) - [Hollow Core Fiber Innovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hollow-core-fiber.md) - [Capacious Computer Memory Tapes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/memory-tape.md) - [Ultra-Fast USB4 Technology](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/usb4.md) - [Ultra-Efficient Fiber Internet Services](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fiber-internet-service.md) - [Revolutionary Quantum Processors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/quantum-processor.md) - [Intricate Optical Phone Aesthetics](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/starry-optical-fiber-technology.md) - [Ultra-Fast Network Service Bundles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frontier-communications.md) - [High-Speed Data Transmission Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highspeed-data-transmission.md)
