# Fenced-In Chesterfields The Hull Sofa is Surrounded in Timber Slats to Create a Semi-Private Nook By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-11-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hull-sofa References: [leibal](http://leibal.com/furniture/hull-sofa/) & [knaufandbrown](http://www.knaufandbrown.com/pages/hullsofa.html) You might not require the partial privacy afforded by the Hull Sofa in your own home, but the contemporary couch can be quite the sanctuary if it is positioned thoughtfully in an office, a library, a school, a mall or in an airport. The [sectional seating system](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flow-seating) obscures the sitters when the onlooker approaches from the back, providing an extra bit of comfort, intimacy and separation from one's surroundings. The [modular couch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-sectional) has wedge-shaped and squared units that permit various configurations. Every piece comes with long and slender ash wood slats that rise straight up from the backrest. Mimicking tall grass, this element becomes a sort of screen, inviting the user to part the stalks and peek through. Doubling as a solution for partitioning open spaces, the Knauf and [Brown Hull Sofa](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/humidityregulating-paint) can greatly alter the atmosphere of a room. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.7/10 - Popularity: 2% | Activity: 12% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Privacy Seating:** Incorporating timber slats into furniture design to create semi-private nooks for intimate workplaces, schools, libraries, airports, and malls. - **Modular Configurations:** Innovating wedge-shaped, squared units with long, slender ash wood slats that rise straight up from the backrest to create screens for partitioning open spaces. - **Atmosphere Altering Couches:** Creating sanctuary-like areas in public spaces through the use of furniture design to improve the customer experience and increase dwell time. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Workspace Design:** Incorporating privacy seating into open office plans to give employees more autonomy over their workspace and encourage deeper focus. - **Hospitality Industry:** Designing modular seating solutions for hotels and restaurants to create intimate and comfortable spaces for guests to enjoy a meal or cocktail. - **Retail Industry:** Using atmosphere-altering couches to create unique shopping experiences, increasing browsing time and customer engagement. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [High-Back Dividing Work Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/plenum-cabin.md) - [People-Pleasing Office Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cubicle-system.md) - [Cozy Versatile Sofa Modules](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/furniture-fjord.md) - [High-Back Embracing Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cozmo-hug.md) - [Modular Multifunctional Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hulala-home-elitenest.md) - [Systematic Seating Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hybla-seating-system.md) - [Modular Sofa Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hybla.md) - [Rounded Modular Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smooth-sofa.md) - [Modular Cat-Friendly Couches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/quarter-sofa.md)
