# Surreal House Sculptures The Modular House Pavilion by Michael Jantzen is Impossibly Abstract By Meghan Young | Published 2014-10-15 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-sculpture References: [michaeljantzen](http://www.michaeljantzen.com/Concept_Art.html) & [michaeljantzen](http://www.michaeljantzen.com) Designed for a [public art installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tess-pavilion) competition dubbed 'The House as a Metaphor,' the Modular House pavilion is a house sculpture that defies logic in only the best ways. Taking on a surreal form as though it leapt out of someone's dream, the house sculpture is comprised of all-white, windowless versions of classic homes that have been stacked precariously on top of each other. Designed by [Michael Jantzen](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/michael-jantzen-2), the house sculpture is nevertheless meant as more than a work of art. As its name gives away, it is a pavilion that provides a public space that people can gather around. Whether for communal purposes or simply to seek a bit of shade, the house sculpture is a striking creation. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 79% | Activity: 58% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Surreal Architecture:** Expanding on the abstract architecture practice with radical new takes on traditional building. - **Modular Design:** Building off of the idea of combining modules to create adaptable and adjustable structures for various uses. - **Public Art Installations:** Taking public installations to a new level with interactive and functional pieces. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Creating opportunities for architects to think outside the box and push their designs to be more inspired and imaginative. - **Construction:** Offering a unique and modular approach to creating buildings that can be tailor-made for specific purposes. - **Art:** Providing a new way for artists and their work to be integrated into public spaces and environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Interactive Architectural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape.md) - [Abstract Fantasy Home Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/abstract-fantasy-home.md) - [Pavilion-Style Art Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/galeria-house.md) - [Interactive Public Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radius-transformation-pavilion.md) - [Serene Waterfront Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lake-house-life-experience-pavilion.md) - [Dynamic Moving-Illusion Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moving-furniture.md) - [Sculptural Inverted Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-with-an-inverted-roof.md) - [Martian-Informed Inflatable Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/martian-house.md) - [Billowing Modular Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/curly-cube.md)
