There's often merit in the design aesthetics and functions of traditional buildings, and House NI is thus designed to embrace those as much as possible without abandoning the tenets of [modern architectural practice](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/norton-house). The home is divided into two distinct tiers, with the upper story embracing a traditional style and the lower story leaning into modernity.

House NI's frame is over 50 years old. Rather than replacing that frame altogether, 1-1 Architect, the architect studio behind the [family home](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/n7-bretscha-house), opted to leave it in place, keeping the original, sturdy [wood roofing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-house-on-a-hill) fully visible on the upper floor. This contrasts starkly against the far more manicured materials in the lower storey, where sharp and smooth wood surfaces prevail. Indeed, the upper and lower storeys look almost like they belong to different homes altogether.
