# Pod-Based Home Brew Machines The Pico Aims to Do for Homemade Beer What the Keurig Did for Coffee By Charlotte Joyce Kidd | Published 2015-10-27 | Unique Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/homemade-beer References: [forbes](http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelwolf/2015/10/26/with-pico-the-keurig-for-beer-is-finally-here/) & [picobrew](https://www.picobrew.com/default) The Pico home brewing system uses capsules -- similar to [Keurig](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coffee-pod-maker) pods -- to make pints of homemade beer. The previous model of the Pico machine was the PicoBrew Zymatic, which was a larger, more expensive model of the new Pico homemade beer brewer. The Zymatic also requires homemade beer makers to measure out their own portions of grain, hops and other ingredients. With the Pico, homemade beer can be made simply by inserting a [pre-made packet of ingredients](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kara-pod) into the machine. Most interestingly, PicoBrew will allow brewers to submit their own recipes for the homemade beer pods and offer royalties for recipes that are turned into pods. This will create an extremely streamlined and easy model for small brewers to offer their craft creations, and offer consumers a way to sample craft beers from around the world without leaving their own homes. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.4/10 - Popularity: 50% | Activity: 73% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Inventions](https://www.trendhunter.com/inventions) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Pod-based Home Brew Machines:** The Pico home brewing system uses capsules -- similar to Keurig pods -- to make pints of homemade beer. - **Pre-made Ingredient Packets:** With the Pico, homemade beer can be made simply by inserting a pre-made packet of ingredients into the machine. - **Community-sourced Recipes:** PicoBrew will allow brewers to submit their own recipes for the homemade beer pods and offer royalties for recipes that are turned into pods. ### Where This Applies - **Home Brewing:** The Pico home brewing system disrupts the home brewing industry by simplifying the brewing process with pre-made ingredient packets. - **Craft Beer:** The Pico's community-sourced recipes for homemade beer pods disrupt the craft beer industry by providing an easy platform for small brewers to showcase their creations. - **Kitchen Appliances:** Pod-based home brew machines like the Pico disrupt the kitchen appliance industry by bringing the convenience and customization of capsule systems to brewing homemade beer. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Smart Beer Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-beer-maker.md) - [At-Home Beer Keg Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/athome-beer-keg-machine.md) - [Pod-Based Modern Coffee Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-bruvi.md) - [At-Home Coffee Pod Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coffee-pod-maker.md) - [At-Home Kombucha Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kombu.md) - [Fermentation Brewing Home Appliances](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kombu-fermenstation.md) - [App-Connected Pod Coffee Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kcaf-smart-coffee-machine.md) - [Molecular Beer Printers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/molecular-beer-printer.md) - [Advanced Pod-Free Coffee Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/podfree-coffee-maker.md)
