From Dutch designer Ireen Laarakker, the Balkonton provides a solution for those who have a difficult time figuring out where to put their compost. Still intended for outdoor use (including balconies), the [home compost receptacle](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minix) provides a place for you to put food waste. Currently seeking finances on crowdfunding platform Oneplanetcrowd, the Balkonton was conceived with Amsterdam city dwellers in mind. The garden has a tube of worms inside that turns [food scraps into compost](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/organic-waste-processing-facility) and keeps the soil in better condition compared to other [vertical gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroponic-tower). This also means you won't have to use fertilizer or replace the soil as you would with other gardens. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.7/10 - Popularity: 73% | Activity: 31% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Composting Vertical Gardens:** Allows for urban gardening while reducing food waste by incorporating a built-in composter. - **Home Composting Solutions:** Provides a solution for those living in apartments who struggle with composting and reducing food waste. - **Indoor Composting:** Provides an indoor composting solution for those without access to outdoor spaces. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Urban Agriculture:** Allows for urban gardening and promotes sustainable living in urban areas. - **Sustainability:** Innovative composting solutions like Balkonton Garden promote sustainable and eco-friendly living. - **Home and Garden:** Provides a solution for individuals living in apartments to engage in home gardening and composting. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Urbanite Worm Compost Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vermicomposter.md) - [Minimalist Indoor Gardening Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balconyfarm-pot.md) - [Odor-Busting Waste Composters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/waste-composter.md) - [Hyper-Fast Countertop Composters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vitamix-foodcycler-eco-5.md) - [Architecture-Inspired Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vegetment-vegetable-cultivator.md) - [Mini Mess-Free Garden Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroponics-garden.md) - [Portable Minimal Smart Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balconyfarm-planter.md) - [Gardening Furniture Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/verda-garden.md) - [Space-Saving Hydroponic Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-hydroponic-garden-tower.md)
