# Compact Holiday Homes The Holiday House Makes the Most of a Small Space By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-11-25 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/holiday-house References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2014/11/19/holiday-house-by-bloem-and-lemstra-architects/) & [bnla.nl](http://bnla.nl/) Bloem and Lemstra Architects designed the '[Holiday House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sommarhus-e),' a compact getaway located on the Dutch island of Vlielamd. The design objective was to create a [small, lightweight house](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hirondelle-tiny-house) that offered significant views of the island. The architects responded to this objective by developing a simple concept: place the rooms which require the most light (living area, kitchen) on the north side. To encourage a [connection with nature](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beaufort-bushland-retreat), the living area can be completely opened up by a set of folding doors. Meanwhile, the bedrooms and bathrooms, which required less light and openness, were relegated to the south side. The biggest challenge was creating a house that felt spacious, despite being limited to 600-square-feet, but Bloem and Lemstra Architects certainly accomplished it. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.5/10 - Popularity: 64% | Activity: 34% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Compact Living:** Designing small and lightweight houses to maximize space and offer significant views. - **Natural Connection:** Encouraging a connection with nature by opening up living spaces with folding doors. - **Room Placement:** Strategic placement of rooms that require the most light in a compact home. ### Where This Applies - **Real Estate:** Incorporating compact living designs to meet the changing needs of urban and suburban households. - **Hospitality:** Creating small but innovative holiday home options for travelers who want to enjoy scenic views and outdoor experiences. - **Sustainable Living:** Developing eco-friendly, energy-efficient compact homes that maximize space and minimize environmental impact. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Compact House Getaways](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chipper-bnb.md) - [Modular Tiny Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vettel-haus.md) - [Picturesque Modern Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ligar-bay-bach.md) - [Prefabricated Miniature Home Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cpsula.md) - [Reinvented Compact Living](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/affordable-housing-prototype.md) - [Relaxing Wooden Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/heatherhill-beach-house.md) - [Compact Beach Resort Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/siesta-key.md) - [Ultra-Efficient Tiny Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hirondelle-tiny-house.md) - [Compact Urban Dwellings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miami-tiny-house.md)
