# Slowly Sinking Bookcases Raw Edges' Hole In The Floor is Full of Whimsy and Character By Meghan Young | Published 2012-02-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hole-in-the-floor References: [trendsnow.net](http://www.trendsnow.net/2012/02/hole-in-the-floor-series-by-raw-edges.html) & [raw-edges](http://www.raw-edges.com/) The Hole In The Floor bookcase will add a touch of whimsy into any home. As its name suggests, it appears to be slowly sinking into a hole. For adults, this [unique design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-eternal-child) simply appeals to their quirky characteristics; for children, however, it indulges imaginations and the possibility of magical properties. Cleverly created by design studio Raw Edges, which was co-founded by Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, the Hole In The Floor bookcase is made to look like the [drawer of a cabinet](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life). It has a classic handle and telltale grooves carved into its side. The way it remains outstretched in the open gives the impression that the doomed cabinet is straining one last time to avoid its demise. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.8/10 - Popularity: 84% | Activity: 83% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Whimsical Furniture:** Design innovative furniture pieces that incorporate whimsical elements to appeal to the quirky characteristics of adults and spark the imagination of children. - **Illusionary Design:** Explore illusionary design techniques to create furniture that mimics optical illusions, such as the sinking effect of the Hole In The Floor bookcase. - **Functional Art:** Combine artistic expression with practical functionality to create furniture pieces that become conversation starters and add character to any space. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Incorporate whimsical design elements in furniture manufacturing processes to cater to a niche market seeking unique and playful home decor solutions. - **Interior Design:** Partner with interior designers to offer illusionary design options that create visually striking spaces and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of homes and businesses. - **Children's Furniture:** Develop children's furniture with imaginative and interactive features, sparking creativity and fantasy play while maintaining functionality and safety. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Expandable Bookcase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/burrow-index-bookcase.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Twisting CGI-Designed Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookscrew-sideboard.md) - [Minimalist Book Storage Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-coffee-table.md) - [Personality-Enhancing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ordo-book.md) - [Bookcase-Equipped Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/low-wall-side-table.md) - [Toy Block-Inspired Wooden Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rotating-picture-book.md)
