# Creepy Rainbow-Hued Children These Hikari Shimoda Paintings are Vibrant and Unnerving By Jason Soy | Published 2012-01-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hikari-shimoda References: [fuckyeahillustrativeart.tumblr](http://fuckyeahillustrativeart.tumblr.com/post/15969809541/hikari-shimoda) & [hikarishimoda.deviantart](http://hikarishimoda.deviantart.com/) Don’t let the [colorful palettes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorama) of these Hikari Shimoda illustrations fool you into thinking they’re whimsical and kid-friendly. Upon closer examination, viewers will find that each polychromatic painting has a darkness to it that seeps through from Shimoda’s [surreal concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neojomon-biomorphic-fantme) or the expressions and facial features of her subjects. The glowing eyes of these kids hearken to horror films in which psychic children use their powers to terrify adults. And if that isn’t strange enough, what other minors do you know who hold impromptu funerals as a pastime or eat the intestines of a stuffed teddy bear for fun? Hikari Shimoda’s paintings truly feature some bizarre happenings. Shimoda explains that her paintings are an outlet for her to express [repressed emotions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miror-collection), which contrasts from her usual cheerful demeanor. She uses children primarily as subjects because they aren’t defined as individuals, yet have the potential to be great human beings. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.1/10 - Popularity: 96% | Activity: 80% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 10% men, 90% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Dark Surrealism:** Exploring the dark and unsettling aspects of art through vibrant and whimsical aesthetics, creating an eerie and thought-provoking experience. - **Psychological Horror:** Infusing glowing eyes and unsettling expressions into artistic representations of children, evoking a sense of horror and unease. - **Repressed Emotions:** Using art as a means to express hidden or suppressed emotions, tapping into the cathartic potential of creativity. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art and Illustration:** Opportunities for artists to push boundaries and challenge conventional ideas of what is considered 'appropriate' or 'child-friendly' in art, attracting audiences who seek thought-provoking and unconventional experiences. - **Film and Entertainment:** Influencing horror film aesthetics by exploring the use of psychic children and their ability to instill fear in adults, offering new ideas for unsettling and creepy narratives. - **Mental Health and Therapy:** Utilizing art therapy techniques to explore and express repressed emotions, providing a safe and creative outlet for individuals to confront and process their inner struggles. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [Anime Horror-Style Reimaginations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/junji-ito-artwork.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [Pop Art Legend-Honoring Dolls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/keiichi-tanaami-1.md) - [Hyper-Realistic Flesh Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/junji-ito.md) - [Whimsical Spirit Art Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anima.md) - [Raunchy Anime-Inspired Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manuela-soto-sosa.md) - [Mesmerizing Sculpture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mesmerizing-sculpture.md) - [Monochromatic Ghost Character Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monochromatic-ghost-character-sculptures.md)
