# Meteorite-Hunting Metal Detectors This High-Tech Metal Detector Can Track Down Iron Meteorites By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2018-04-03 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hightech-metal-detector References: [newatlas](https://newatlas.com/metal-detectors-antarctic-meteorites/54009/) & [bas.ac.uk](https://www.bas.ac.uk/media-post/successful-testing-mission-at-uk-arctic-research-station/) A group of researchers working out of the [University of Manchester](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/asd-fieldspec-4) are implementing a high-tech metal detector that is being used to track down rare and valuable [iron meteorites](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/maestro-20-meteorite) up in the Arctic Circle. To develop this high-tech metal detector, the engineers took inspiration from machines being used for everything from landmine detection, material recycling and airport security, with the end result being an exceptionally compact but powerful metal detector that can be towed along a Ski-Doo. Currently being tested at the [British Antarctic Survey's](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mutable-tactics) NERC Arctic research station in Norway, this high-tech metal detector could be used to help humanity better understand the origins of the solar system, as well as do a better job unearthing valuable interstellar materials for use here on Earth. What's more, the underlying technology could potentially be used to improve metal detection mechanisms in various industries. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 10% | Activity: 15% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **High-tech Metal Detectors:** Development of compact and powerful metal detectors inspired by various industries. - **Rare Iron Meteorite Tracking:** Use of high-tech metal detectors to locate rare and valuable iron meteorites. - **Interstellar Material Unearthing:** Utilizing metal detectors to extract valuable interstellar materials for use on Earth. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Landmine Detection:** Opportunity to incorporate high-tech metal detection technology for improved landmine detection. - **Material Recycling:** Potential disruptive innovation in material recycling through advanced metal detection techniques. - **Airport Security:** Application of compact and powerful metal detectors to enhance airport security measures. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Smartphone Metal Detectors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/metal-detector1.md) - [Sustainable Deep-Sea Harvesting Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/impossible-metals.md) - [Martian Meteorite Collectibles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sothebys-nwa.md) - [Rare Metal Discoveries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/niobiumrich-carbonatite.md) - [Autonomous Mine Detection Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mine-detector-robot.md) - [Stone-Like Meteorite Luxe Bags](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/swipe-bag-1.md) - [Ruggedly Intuitive Geiger Counters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radiation-detector.md) - [Crystal-Clear Smart Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-telescopes.md) - [Sea Mine-Destroying Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minedestroying-underwater-robots.md)
