'[SHoP Architects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/primark-swap-shop)' recently announced plans to build America's first wooden high-rise apartments. In cities across the US, a tremendous amount of concrete and steel is devoted to accommodating growing urban populations. While these materials are durable, they have a very large carbon footprint.

SHoP Architects plans to make high-rise apartments that are more eco-friendly by using wood as the primary construction material. Wood has a lower carbon footprint than traditional building materials, making it a [more sustainable choice for construction](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-cleveland-foundation). Furthermore, the [wood itself stores extra carbon](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/populus-hotel). In addition to being a more eco-friendly material, modern wood is also more flexible, stronger and fire-resistant than in the past. This means that wood is now a suitable choice for constructing large residential and commercial structures.

SHoP Architects plans to construct one wooden apartment building in New York City and then a second building in Portland, Oregon.
