# High Headboard Couches The Highlife Sofa Takes Formal Inspiration from Stately Sleepers By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-01-25 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highlife-sofa References: [ckr.se](http://www.ckr.se/) The Highlife Sofa comprises [plushy cushions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebulone-sofa) upon four elevating legs, armrests and a backrest, yet its overall appearance is remarkably unusual. Claesson Koivisto Rune has designed the piece to simultaneously embody a sense of sturdy structure, despite its spindly footings, its thin upholstered panels and its extraordinarily exaggerated backing. When one observes the [chic chesterfield](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biboni-sofa), an atypically tall backrest is what jumps out first. It seems to mimic the grandiose headboard of a king size bed. The reason for this unexpected formal extrusion contributes to an aesthetic uniqueness and a contemporary practicality. The carefully crafted [Tacchini](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/butter-sofa) Highlife Sofa is ideally not placed against a wall. It's lofty spinal support acts as a perfect partition so that sitters can keep their laptop and tablet activities concealed from people approaching from behind. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.3/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 4% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Exaggerated Backrests:** Opportunity for designing furniture pieces that incorporate unusually tall backrests, similar to the Highlife Sofa, to create a unique aesthetic and contemporary practicality. - **Unconventional Upholstery:** Opportunity to explore thin upholstered panels in furniture design, like the Highlife Sofa, to create a sense of sturdy structure while maintaining a sleek appearance. - **Functional Partitioning:** Opportunity to design furniture items with elevated spinal support, such as the Highlife Sofa, that can act as a partition for concealing activities and providing privacy. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity for furniture designers to incorporate exaggerated backrests and unconventional upholstery techniques into their creations, inspired by the Highlife Sofa. - **Interior Design:** Opportunity for interior designers to utilize furniture pieces with functional partitioning, like the Highlife Sofa, to create versatile and privacy-enhancing spaces. - **Workspace Solutions:** Disruptive innovation opportunity for workspace designers to incorporate furniture items that provide functional partitioning, inspired by the Highlife Sofa, for enhanced productivity and privacy in open office layouts. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Organic Contour Couch Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/siwa-sofa.md) - [Decadent Lounge Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/poet-sofa.md) - [Modern Moveable Backrest Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ds888-collina.md) - [Elevator-Inspired Cozy Sofa Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lift-sofa.md) - [Organically Shaped Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repose-sofa.md) - [Plush Oversized Sectionals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/albany-park-kova-pit-sofa.md) - [Enveloping Sofa Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/perron-pillo.md) - [Plush Sculptural Lounge Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rokko.md) - [Modular Multifunctional Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hulala-home-elitenest.md)
