# Textured Mid-Century Houses Highland Park Residence Has Moody Hues with Modernist Material Honesty By Amy Duong | Published 2025-09-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highland-park-residence References: [smitharc](https://www.smitharc.com/beverly/) A Highland Park residence blends moody colour with modernist material honesty in a 5,600-square-foot Highland Park residence designed by Joshua Rice with [SmithArc](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/greenway-parks). Its palette is grounded in [dark limestone walls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/encino-home), fumed oak cabinetry, warm-grey laminates and soft plaster mixed with Ceppo marble floors. Expanses of glass connect interior and outdoor spaces while raked wood panels and stucco soften the stone’s rigor. Deep blue tiles and Icelandic marble in the primary suite contrast with nature, light and shadow to give warmth to shadow. The layout emphasises everyday family life with a flowing ground floor plan that merges kitchen, dining, outdoors and living spaces. Private quarters are tucked behind a sculptural oak wall that organises circulation. Each room allows natural light to penetrate without glare, while ventilation and outdoor connection reduce dependency on artificial cooling. Vintage furniture and sculptural lighting enrich texture and identity, helping the home feel both rooted in [mid-century modern precedent](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-perch) and tailored to contemporary living.
