# Humongous Heightened Vintage Bikes These High Wheel Bicycles Bring an Old Concept to Modern Age By Michael Baxter | Published 2014-03-28 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/high-wheel-bicycle References: [designboom](http://www.designboom.com/design/high-wheeled-bicycles-by-standard-highwheels-for-luxury-penny-farthing-03-10-2014/) & [standardhighwheels.se](http://www.standardhighwheels.se/) A high wheel bicycle is one of those inventions that everyone knows about, but almost nobody has actually seen. The image of the bike has been everywhere from commercials to Family Guy, but the actual usage of these bikes is almost non-existent. Standard Highwheels is looking to change that by modernizing the design of high wheel bicycles. The [cycling industry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bicycle-technology) has spent a lot of time trying to streamline bikes and make them [sleeker and more functional](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bicycle-store). These bicycles certainly aren’t that, but they do manage to be crafty while also being modern. The funny thing that most people probably wouldn’t assume is that the speed of the bike is directly related to the size of the wheel in the inverse way most would think. It turns out that the bigger the wheel the faster the bike will travel, so if you really have a need for speed go big or go home.
