# Deceptively Empty Cabinets The Hide & Seek Side Table Uses a Magician's Mirror to Appear Vacant By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-06-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hide-seek-side-table References: [notcot.org](http://www.notcot.org/post/48455/) & [florentcoirier](http://www.florentcoirier.com/index.php?/project/hideandseek--coming-soon/) How wonderful would it be to present the impression of a clutter-free home using tricky illusory techniques? The Hide & Seek side table is inspired by one of the oldest illusions in the book that allows an occupied space to appear empty with the use a mere piece of [reflective material](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zigzag-collection). Florent Coirier designed this chic-looking cubby with a plush biological fabric lining out of a charcoal-finished wooden box crafted from sustainably sourced timber. It stands lightly on metal rails, features a door-less open front and an understated hatch on top. It isn't until you lift this little trapdoor that you'll discover the intended [primary storage compartment](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/berto-hidden-secrets) of the Hide & Seek side table. A [diagonal base holds your possessions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/taarof-table) in the top-back diagonal compartment of the cupboard, invisible behind a downward-slanted rectangular mirror. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.8/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 38% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Illusory Interior Design:** Opportunity for designing furniture and home decor items that create the illusion of a clutter-free space using reflective materials. - **Sustainable Wooden Furniture:** Opportunity for creating stylish and environmentally-friendly furniture pieces using sustainably sourced timber. - **Hidden Storage Solutions:** Opportunity for designing furniture with hidden storage compartments to maximize space and minimize clutter. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity to develop illusory furniture designs that enhance the aesthetics of any interior space. - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity to produce sustainable wooden furniture that appeals to environmentally-conscious consumers. - **Home Organization:** Disruptive innovation opportunity to create innovative storage solutions that help individuals maintain a clutter-free living environment. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Discreet Folding Shelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-shelf.md) - [Perplexingly Angular Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tadashi-side-table.md) - [Illusory Cracked Base Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/conceptual-side-table.md) - [Cabinet-Concealed Modern Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/obelisk-3.md) - [Puzzling Geometric Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/linked-side-table.md) - [Intersecting Two-Part Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shaolin-side-table.md) - [Asymmetrical Storage Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crossbred-side-table.md) - [Minimalist Book Storage Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-coffee-table.md) - [Illusory Doorway Mirrors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/panis-mirror.md)
