# Ocean Organism-Inspired Illuminators The 'Navicula' Hanging Ceiling Light Fixture is Modern By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2017-05-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hanging-ceiling-light-fixture References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/pendant-light-inspired-by-microscopic-ocean-diatoms/) & [davidtrubridge](https://www.davidtrubridge.com/) The 'Navicula' hanging ceiling light fixture is the design work of David Trubridge and draws inspiration in the design from the microscopic organisms living in the Earth's oceans. The New Zealand-based designer created the 'Navicula' light by utilizing [CNC](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/soundlink-plus) cut bamboo plywood that was then strategically bent and shaped in order to create the [fluid illusion of movement](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loja). The 'Navicula' hanging ceiling light fixture allows light to escape through the various slits and sections on the light in order to create an illumination mood that is inherently unique. The 'Navicula' light looks like something of a shell or skin and brings an organic touch to a home or office space. This creates a more natural atmosphere that reminds us of the life around us that we often forget is there. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 80% | Activity: 57% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Ocean-inspired Lighting:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create lighting fixtures that mimic the fluid illusion of movement inspired by ocean organisms. - **Organic Atmospheres:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop products that bring an organic touch to home and office spaces, creating a more natural and soothing atmosphere. - **Biomorphic Designs:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore biomimicry to design products that are inspired by and imitate the shapes and forms found in nature. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Lighting:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Innovate new techniques and materials for creating unique and organic lighting fixtures. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Integrate organic elements into interior design concepts, creating spaces that are visually inspired by the natural world. - **Furniture and Decor:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Design furniture and decor items that embody the fluid aesthetic inspired by ocean organisms, adding a touch of nature to any room. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Lighting Fixture Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/otherworldly-lighting-fixture.md) - [Nautical-Inspired Warm LIghting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/booi.md) - [Plant Pod-Inspired Pendant Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nature-inspired-pendant-light.md) - [Curved Pendant Ceiling Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nova-light.md) - [Algae-Based Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chandeliers-sconces.md) - [Organic Light Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lapso.md) - [Intricate Sculptural Lighting Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nova-pendant-light.md) - [Glowing Tubular Light Fixtures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/array-lighting.md) - [Shell-Like Structural Wall Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barnacle-wall-sconce.md)
