# Curvaceous Cave-Like Architecture The Grotto Sauna by the PARTISANS Design Group is Challenging By Alyson Wyers | Published 2014-12-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grotto-sauna References: [mymodernmet.tumblr](http://mymodernmet.tumblr.com/post/104351301901/the-grotto-project-by-the-partisans-design-group) & [partisanprojects](http://www.partisanprojects.com/projects-index/grotto-sauna) At first glance the Grotto sauna may look like a [traditional cabin](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jonas-sauna) (albeit perched on rocky cliffs), but the interior is full of surprising [natural curves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wild-house). Designed by the PARTISANS design group, the experimental architecture seems simple on the outside, but the inside "followed dynamic air movements in curvature forms." The firm worked closely with both a mill work and steel fabricator on the project to create a new process. They also used 3D technology in scanning, modelling and building the Grotto sauna. The idyllic location cannot be ignored either. Nestled in the [rocky shores of Lake Huron](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blue-insight-cave-space), the sauna is built on the edge of a private island. While the exterior matches its surroundings, the interior offers a more sculptural and sensory experience. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.5/10 - Popularity: 91% | Activity: 96% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Sculptural Architecture:** The Grotto Sauna's interior design showcases the potential for sculptural forms in architectural spaces. - **3D Technology in Architecture:** The use of 3D scanning, modeling, and building techniques in constructing the Grotto Sauna presents opportunities for technological advancements in architecture. - **Collaborative Design Processes:** The partnership between the design group, millwork, and steel fabricators highlights the potential for collaborative design processes in architectural projects. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** The Grotto Sauna's unique design and use of experimental processes open up possibilities for innovation and disruption in the field of architecture. - **Construction:** The integration of 3D technology and collaborative design processes demonstrated in the Grotto Sauna project presents disruptive opportunities in the construction industry. - **Technology:** The adoption of 3D technology in architecture, as seen in the Grotto Sauna, reflects how technology can disrupt and enhance various industries, including the technology sector itself. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Geometric Cave-Like Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cavelike-homes.md) - [Nature-Inspired Museum Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/art-sauna.md) - [Salvaged Material-Made Saunas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/upcycled-sauna.md) - [Reflection-Inducing Floating Saunas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/trosten-floating-sauna.md) - [Communal Wooden Peninsula Saunas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hotspot.md) - [Architectural Home Saunas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-luminar.md) - [View-Overlooking Portable Wooden Saunas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/saunabivak.md) - [Tranquil Reimagined Wellness Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ziedlejas.md) - [Cave-Like Retail Interiors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cavelike-interior.md)
