# Measuring the "Greeness" of Lawns The Grass Scanner By Cowbag | Published 2008-07-02 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grass-scanner-match-the-colour-of-your-grass-with-royal-parks References: [thisiscowshed.blogspot](http://www.thisiscowshed.blogspot.com) I think the grass scanner idea by the RCA Design Interactions show (UK) is brilliant. The Grass Scanner, a device designed by Alice Wang that measures how green your grass is. Using 3 Pantone Color Cue devices, it takes readings from three random patches of the grass and outputs a Pantone colour code for one to compare. With the codes, one can refer to the PARKTONE cards which contain average grass colours of [Royal Parks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cognitive-bloom) and other green areas in the UK for people to match up with their own garden... and feel like dismal failures in comparison. For example, I am sunk as it has no yellowing brown tones. It is precise too as [grass condition](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oko-sensor) in different areas of a given park may vary, each area was measured several times before an average of the data was used to create the PARKTONE card. I am not sure what it is like in other parts of the world, but in the UK, an unofficial 'How Green Is Your Lawn' competition takes place every summer. The competition pays particular attention to people's front lawns, leaving no need for an excuse to peer over the garden fence. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.3/10 - Popularity: 28% | Activity: 32% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Smart Lawn Technology:** The creation of smart lawn technology such as the Grass Scanner can revolutionize the lawn care industry by providing homeowners with precise data on their lawn's health. - **Eco-friendly Landscaping:** The development of eco-friendly landscaping options such as measuring the 'greeness' of lawns can provide opportunities for companies to capitalize on the growing trend towards sustainability. - **Data-driven Lawn Care:** Data-driven lawn care through the use of devices like the Grass Scanner can provide lawn care companies with valuable data to better service their clients. ### Who This Affects Most - **Landscaping:** The landscaping industry can take advantage of the smart lawn technology trend by providing customers with data-driven lawn care options. - **Environmental Sustainability:** Companies focused on promoting environmental sustainability can leverage eco-friendly landscaping options to appeal to customers interested in green solutions. - **Technology:** The technology industry can develop more smart lawn technology solutions to meet the growing demand for data-driven lawn care. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Winning Lawn Care Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ultimate-game-day-kit.md) - [Portable Soil Monitors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-soil-monitor.md) - [Lawn Care Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lawn-care-robots.md) - [Solar-Powered Robotic Lawnmowers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sunscout-pro-robot-lawnmower.md) - [Connected Plant Care Sensors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/krado-plant-sensor.md) - [Multifunctional Lawn Care Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ecoflow-blade.md) - [Sweeping Lawn Debris Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gardena-leaf-lawn-collector.md) - [Precision Lawn Care Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yard-force-nx60i-robotic-lawnmower.md) - [Aerial Fertilizer Measuring Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/asd-fieldspec-4.md)
