# Cabinet-Seat Hybrids Bora Cakilkaya's Grandma Chair Accommodates Those With a Knitting Hobby By Meghan Young | Published 2012-03-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grandma-chair References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/grandma-chair-by-bora-cakilkaya/) & [boracakilkaya.tumblr](http://boracakilkaya.tumblr.com/post/18603641589/grandma-multi-function-chair-designed-by-designer) The Grandma Chair is almost as cute and quirky as the old ladies that inspired its design. It is a relatively simple seat, that is if one ignores the cluster of colorful drawers resting directly above it. Reminiscent of Seung Yong Song's [space-saving chair](http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seung-yong-song3), the Grandma Chair extends upwards to accommodate another useful function. Instead of a ladder, this piece of furniture boasts a mini asymmetrical cabinet that could hold varying knitting supplies. Designed by Bora Çakilkaya, the Grandma Chair was inspired by her very own grandmothers, both of whom had crafty hobbies. For those who fear that the Grandma Chair would topple over due to its top-heaviness, Cakilkaya made sure to [extend one of the bottom legs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pere-chair) to distribute the weight. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.0/10 - Popularity: 69% | Activity: 42% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Cabinet-seat Hybrids:** There is an opportunity for furniture companies to incorporate additional storage and functionality into seating options. - **Crafty Furniture Design:** Craft-inspired furniture designs could appeal to a growing market of DIY enthusiasts and hobbyists. - **Asymmetrical Cabinets:** Asymmetrical cabinet designs offer a unique aesthetic and functional option for furniture designers and manufacturers. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Design:** Furniture designers could explore incorporating additional functionality into seating options to appeal to consumers seeking multi-purpose solutions. - **Craft Supplies:** Craft supply companies could partner with furniture designers to create pieces that cater to crafting enthusiasts looking for stylish storage solutions. - **Home Decor:** Home decor companies could benefit from incorporating unique and functional furniture pieces into their product offerings to capture the attention of design-conscious consumers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Quirky Postmodern Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-ebba-armchair.md) - [Chunky Knitted Quilted Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knitty-chair.md) - [Posh Pet-Friendly Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arch-chair-design.md) - [Antitheft Storage Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/afford-chair.md) - [Safety Centric Armchair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lotte-armchair.md) - [Posh Pet-Friendly Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/quella-chair.md) - [Modernized Rocking Chair Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nodding-chair.md) - [Chaotically Natural Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kkochgalam-chair.md) - [Cozy Storage-Focused Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-pocket-chair.md)
