# Extended Atrium Abodes This Gorgeous Family Home Features a Lengthy Light Chamber By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2015-02-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gorgeous-family-home References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2015/02/03/the-aldo-house-by-prototype-design-lab/) & [pdlab](http://pdlab.ca/) Prototype Design Lab designed a gorgeous family home in Mississauga, Canada. Made up of three slipping volumes of varying heights and lengths, the [Aldo House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-c) is immediately visually arresting. Each volume is placed in accordance to the site and its conditions, creating a secondary staggered affect. To continue to differentiate them, the volumes are clad with different materials (wood planks, white quartz stone and corten steel) each of which were chosen to reflect the function of its interior. Inside, a [full-length atrium](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-atrium-house) ([capped by a skylight](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/datum-house)) offers much in the way of natural light. Guests enter the atrium upon arrival, and as they continue through the space they encounter a suspended staircase that runs parallel to the indoor bamboo garden. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.8/10 - Popularity: 80% | Activity: 27% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Slipping Volume Homes:** Designing homes with varying heights and lengths arranged to reflect function of its interior. - **Innovative Material Cladding:** Exploring various materials to use on the exterior of buildings to differentiate volumes of a space. - **Full-length Atriums:** Designing homes with full-length atriums to enhance natural light. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Pushing the boundaries of traditional architecture with innovative designs. - **Construction:** Experimenting with new materials and techniques in construction. - **Real Estate:** Incorporating natural light design into real estate properties to increase value and energy efficiency. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Monolithic Sleek Summer Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vollerup-atrium.md) - [Courtyard Connection Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studioac-2.md) - [Temple-Inspired Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/j-kidman-architecture.md) - [Anticipatory Architectural Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vulcan-house.md) - [Compact Corner Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modus-architect.md) - [Environmentally Blending Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ineffable-light.md) - [Moat-Edge Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-antriya-house.md) - [Mid-Century Style Montreal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/residence-ave-duchastel.md) - [Introspective Charred Pine Extension](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-with-a-hidden-atrium.md)
