# Spam-Detecting Phone Apps The New Google Phone App Alerts Users to Spam Calls By Joey Haar | Published 2016-07-26 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/google-phone-app References: [lifehacker](http://lifehacker.com/googles-dialer-app-now-warns-you-when-youre-getting-a-c-1784303487) & [plus.google](https://plus.google.com/%20Nexus/posts/PLsxmDRUd4K) [Google](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scam-protection) is making an effort to foil the plans of spam callers with the newly updated Google phone app. The built-in app available on all [Nexus](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/large-tabular-model) and Android One phones, will alert consumers to spam calls by turning the "Incoming call" screen red when it believes an illicit call is on the other line. Alerting consumers to spam calls isn't easy, as the risks of sending false alarms or accidentally labeling a legitimate caller as a spam dialer can outweigh the reward of rebuffing the spam itself. Rather than guessing at the sketchiness of a phone number, then, the Google phone app will only issue a spam alert if the number comes from its constantly updated list of spam phone numbers. In other words, it's very unlikely that the Google phone app will accidentally mark a relative or friend as spam. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 14% | Activity: 42% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Mobile](https://www.trendhunter.com/mobile) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Spam-blocking Phone Apps:** The trend towards spam-blocking phone apps provides a disruptive innovation opportunity for companies to create more efficient and accurate algorithms for detecting and blocking phone spammers. - **AI-powered Caller Identification:** The trend towards AI-powered caller identification provides a disruptive innovation opportunity for companies to develop more advanced algorithms that can accurately identify and label incoming calls as spam or legitimate. - **Consumer Demand for Call Privacy:** The trend towards increased consumer demand for call privacy provides a disruptive innovation opportunity for companies to create phone apps that offer enhanced privacy features, such as encrypted calls and anonymous caller blocking. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Telecom:** The telecom industry can leverage this trend towards spam-blocking phone apps by offering more advanced and user-friendly call blocking solutions that integrate with existing phone networks. - **Mobile App Development:** The mobile app development industry can leverage this trend towards AI-powered caller identification by developing more sophisticated algorithms that can accurately identify and label incoming calls as spam or legitimate. - **Consumer Electronics:** The consumer electronics industry can leverage this trend towards increased consumer demand for call privacy by creating phones with enhanced privacy features, such as encrypted calls and anonymous caller blocking, as well as partnering with telecom companies and app developers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Scam-Thwarting OS Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/scam-protection.md) - [Spam Caller Protection Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/livecaller.md) - [Real-Time Anti-Spam Call Services](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/truecaller-app.md) - [Smart Call Management](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/automaticall.md) - [Intelligent Call Management](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hiya-ai.md) - [Tracking Device Safety Implementations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/antistalking-measures.md) - [Tracker-Detecting Smartphone Updates](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/google-find-my-device-network.md) - [Proactive Tracker Detection Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/detection-app.md) - [Mobile Privacy Guards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/who-is-tracking-my-phone.md)
