# 80s Convict Parodies Golden is the New Black Likes the Netflix Program to an 80s Sitcom By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-09-17 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/golden-is-the-new-black References: [refinery29](http://www.refinery29.com/2014/09/74509/orange-is-the-new-black-golden-girls) & [youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7qplOJhDoQ) 'Golden is the New Black' is a hilarious new parody that enmeshes the current [Netflix](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/streamberry) original series Orange is the New Black with an old favorite: The Golden Girls. It's true, sometimes the series makes women's prison look a little more fun than one might expect; filled with surprisingly tender moments, comedic relief and a general sense of sisterhood, Orange is the New Black can make you feel like prison is more of a summer camp for adults, rather than an actual punishment. Set to the theme song of the Golden Girls, you really get the sense the show is [more of a sitcom](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/friends-box) than a dramedy. For, what is Big Red if not a modern-day Sophia Petrillo? And who could deny the similarities between prison nympho Nicky Nichols and sex-crazed socialite Blanche Devereaux? One thing is for certain, the Golden Girls would definitely run the Litchfield penitentiary. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.3/10 - Popularity: 15% | Activity: 47% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 10% men, 90% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) > [Media](https://www.trendhunter.com/media) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Prison Parodies:** Creating parodies that combine prison themes with other beloved shows from the past, like 'Golden is the New Black,' offers a disruptive innovation opportunity in the entertainment industry. - **Blending Genres:** Exploring the fusion of comedy and drama through sitcom-style adaptations of popular TV series, such as 'Golden is the New Black,' presents a disruptive innovation opportunity in the realm of television. - **Reviving Retro Content:** Revitalizing nostalgia-driven content, like 'Golden is the New Black,' by incorporating it into modern cultural phenomena like Netflix originals, opens up a disruptive innovation opportunity in the media industry. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Entertainment:** The entertainment industry can leverage the popularity of prison parodies, such as 'Golden is the New Black,' to attract a wider audience and create unique content that disrupts traditional genre conventions. - **Television:** Television networks and streaming platforms can consider producing more sitcom-style adaptations of existing shows, akin to 'Golden is the New Black,' to tap into new viewer demographics and drive viewership by merging comedy and drama in innovative ways. - **Media:** Reviving retro content like 'Golden is the New Black' within the context of modern media platforms provides an opportunity for media companies to captivate audiences through a combination of nostalgia and fresh interpretations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Show-Inspired Block Puzzle Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/golden-girls-lego-kit.md) - [Customized Streaming Platform Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/streamberry.md) - [Beauty Crime Mockumentaries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cosmetic-criminals.md) - [Senior Series Frozen Yogurts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cheesecake-froyo.md) - [Bizarre Transformative Comedy Films](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chicken-nugget-trailer.md) - [Spoof Cosmetics Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/americas-next-top-primer.md) - [All-Ages Self-Care Menus](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-golden-trio.md) - [Revived Retro Animations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stranger-things-animated-series.md) - [80s-Inspired Tanning Gels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orange-gelee.md)
