# Pencil Shaving Furnishings The Giotto Coffee Table Has a Crafty and Nostalgic Flair By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-04-16 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/giotto-coffee-table References: [studiobaag](http://studiobaag.com/?page_id=1279) It's no coincidence that the Giotto Coffee Table looks a little bit like the leftovers after you've sharpened a pencil. Inspired by the way that the shavings curl around in a cone or a circle, the tabletop stirs more aesthetic intrigue than you would usually find in a basic family room furnishing. Studio BAAG used ash wood and resin to build the three-legged side table with an apparently uneven woodgrain top. The piece was enhanced with black painted accents, giving it dark feet, a ring around it circular perimeter and a large spot in the middle. It begins to look as though it's excess graphite in the center and the exterior coating of the writing implement that's outlining the Giotto Coffee Table. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.5/10 - Popularity: 25% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Pencil Shaving Aesthetic:** Exploring designs and materials that evoke the look and feel of pencil shavings to create uniquely styled furniture and decorative art pieces. - **Irregular Woodgrain Surfaces:** Exploring ways to use wood and other natural materials to create furniture with unique textures and patterns that are both functional and visually appealing. - **Minimalist Design with Bold Accents:** Incorporating bold, contrasting accents (such as dark feet and black painted rings) into minimalist furniture designs to create eye-catching pieces that still retain a modern aesthetic. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Designing and creating unique, visually appealing furniture pieces that challenge conventional styles and bring a new level of artistry to the industry. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating furniture and decorative pieces with unique textures and patterns into interior design schemes, creating spaces that are both functional and visually interesting. - **Art and Sculpture:** Using unconventional materials and design elements to create sculptural pieces that blur the lines between furniture and functional art, challenging traditional notions of art and design. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Solid-Ash Wooden Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/boia.md) - [Harmonious Helical Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vortex-coffee-table.md) - [Wavy Sculptural Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-coffee-tables.md) - [Italian Appetizer Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aperitivo-coffee-table.md) - [Raw Stone-Inspired Jagged Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fels-coffee-table.md) - [Italian Material-Highlighting Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ria-coffee.md) - [Topographic Wooden Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/topographic-coffee-table.md) - [Luxe Low-Slung Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/attraction-coffee-table.md) - [Dynamic Strong Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sharp-table.md)
