# Ripping Up The Art World Doris Salcedo Cracks Tate Modern Gallery By Rich | Published 2007-10-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/giant-crack-appears-in-tate-gallery References: [news.bbc](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7033619.stm) & [tate.org.uk](http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/dorissalcedo/default.shtm) As visitors to the Tate Modern gallery in London enter the galleries giant turbine hall, they are confronted with the disturbing sight of a [giant crack](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-into-darkness). Starting as a small fissure, the 167 metre fracture grows wider and deeper as it snakes the entire length of the hall. Created by Columbian artist Doris Salcedo, the piece is titled "Shibboleth," after a Biblical massacre in which members of a defeated tribe were identified for slaughter based on the way they spoke. The artist describes the sculpture as laden with meaning as deep as the crack itself. It represents the divide and gap between Europeans and the rest of mankind. Personally I enjoy the concept of creating a sculpture that is more about the space it does not fill, rather than the space it actually occupies. It is in effect a hole. An empty space, that due to it's dynamic and powerful nature created a piece that is thought provoking and demands time and contemplation to get the most out of it. In this respect it is very different from some of the previous commissions to the [yearly installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folded-time), that have been more immediately involving of the viewer, such as the [giant slides](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-great-tree) by Carsten Höller. The crack, cast in concrete and lowered into a hole dug along the length of the hall will be filled in next year, leaving a permanent and giant scar. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 17% | Activity: 8% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Interactive Art Installations:** Opportunity for artists to create immersive and thought-provoking experiences through interactive art installations. - **Symbolic Art:** Art that carries deep meaning and symbolism, encouraging viewers to reflect and engage in meaningful dialogue. - **Art as Social Commentary:** Using art as a medium to explore and raise awareness of social and cultural issues. ### Where This Applies - **Art Galleries:** Art galleries can embrace interactive and symbolic art installations to provide a unique and engaging experience for visitors. - **Museums:** Museums can feature art exhibits that serve as social commentaries, fostering conversations and creating a platform for critical thinking. - **Public Spaces:** Installing symbolic and thought-provoking art in public spaces can enrich communities and spark conversations about important societal topics. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Broken-Aesthetic Sculpture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brokenaesthetic-sculpture-collection.md) - [Artful Meditative Sculptural Caves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drawing-on-space.md) - [Permanent London Art Installtions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/infinite-accumulation.md) - [Warped Georgian Townhouse Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-week-at-the-knees.md) - [Gas Rig Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/striking-art-installation.md) - [Monochromatic Sculptural Gateways](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-gateway.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [CD-Comprised Towering Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stratagems.md) - [Interactive Kinetic Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-kinetic-sculptures.md)
