The homeowners wanted to incorporate their love of modern art and entertaining guests whilst under instructions to reserve the [heritage of their revamped 1960's bungalow](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casa-sofia), so Gestion René Desjardins came up with this genius concept. The 'Iron Lace Project' resulted in this intricate, [perforated steel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-xo) masterpiece. The staircase runs through the whole house, which is split into three open plan areas for the Canadian couple and their three teenage children. What's interesting about the project is the perforations make for spectacular light patterns, once sunlight streams into the house in the mornings. It's also an amazing touch that the designers decided to carry the pattern through the whole house. Using the design in connecting spots like the landing allows the design to flow. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.7/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Steel Staircase Trends:** Innovate new steel staircase designs that incorporate intricate and perforated patterns for unique lighting and aesthetic effects. - **Open Plan Living Trends:** Integrate steel staircases as focal points for open-plan living that allow for easy and natural flow in multi-level homes. - **Heritage Renovation Trends:** Incorporate modern elements in renovating heritage homes while preserving the original structure to create stunning, contemporary living spaces. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Design and construct steel staircases that incorporate modern elements and intricate designs for clients in the residential and commercial sectors. - **Interior Design:** Integrate steel staircases as statement pieces in open-plan living spaces for contemporary homes, luxury hotels, and commercial venues. - **Metalworking:** Specialize in creating intricate and perforated steel designs for staircase elements, furniture, and other interior design applications for clients in the design and construction industries. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Concrete Spiral Staircase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cadenza.md) - [Remodelled Staircase-Centric Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobalt-coach-house.md) - [Renovated Victorian Toronto Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flow-house.md) - [Landscape-Honoring Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/des-forges-residence.md) - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Timbered Passage Stair Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-annex.md) - [Mid-Century Style Montreal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/residence-ave-duchastel.md) - [Tranquil A‑Frame Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/steel-a-frame.md)
