I suggest you do not try at home. "Sodium is a soft, silvery metal that explodes violently on contact with water and burns skin by reacting with even the slightest moisture. Chlorine is a choking yellow gas, used with mixed success in the trenches of World War I (it was known to have killed about equal numbers on both sides of the trench). When these chemicals meet, they react in a fierce ball of spitting fire and clouds of white smoke. The smoke is sodium chloride (NaCl), or table salt, which I used to season a [basket of popcorn](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/extra-virgin-olive-oil-sea-salt-popcorn) I hung over the reaction. ... As a way of [salting popcorn](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pops-praiseworthy-popcorn), though, this kind of salt synthesis is pretty out there. The salt is very fresh, but the hazards of blowing pure chlorine into a bowl of liquid sodium are very real. Seconds after this picture was taken, the net melted, dropping popcorn into the bowl and sending a shower of flaming liquid sodium balls in all directions. No one was hurt because I'd made safety preparations for even the worst-case scenario, which this nearly was—only an uncontrolled chlorine leak would have been worse, in which case I had a clear path to run like hell." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.2/10 - Popularity: 35% | Activity: 82% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Food](https://www.trendhunter.com/food) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Explosive Seasoning:** The innovative method of using explosive reactions to season food presents opportunities for unique flavor experiences and tableside entertainment in the food industry. - **Chemical Reactions:** Exploring the use of chemical reactions in unexpected ways can lead to disruptive innovations in various industries, such as food, chemistry, and entertainment. - **Safety Preparations:** Developing advanced safety measures and protocols to handle potentially hazardous situations can create opportunities for innovation and improvement in industries that deal with volatile substances and materials. ### Where This Applies - **Food:** The concept of explosive seasoning can be applied in the food industry to create unique and exciting dining experiences, attracting adventurous eaters and food enthusiasts. - **Chemistry:** The exploration and utilization of chemical reactions in unconventional ways offer opportunities for advancements and breakthroughs in the field of chemistry, leading to new materials, processes, and applications. - **Entertainment:** Incorporating explosive reactions as a form of entertainment or spectacle can captivate audiences and create memorable experiences in the entertainment industry, ranging from live shows to educational demonstrations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Popcorn Seasoning Sprays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/popcorn-spray.md) - [Sparkling Kettle Corn Snacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sweet-salty-kettle-corn.md) - [Modern Stovetop Popcorn Makers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-popsmith-popper.md) - [Microwavable Popcorn Cobs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/poppin-cobs.md) - [All-in-One Popcorn Pods](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/popcorn-pods.md) - [Spicy Cheesy Popcorn Snacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flamin-cheesy.md) - [Colorful Premium Popcorn Snacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/popcorn-kitchen-rainbow-sweet-salt.md) - [Wasabi Popcorn Snacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wasabi-popcorn.md) - [Nostalgic Ready-to-Eat Popcorn Snacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pop-secret-readytoeat-popcorn.md)
