The facility is being developed by General Fusion, a Canadian energy company, and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). The collaborators are looking into fusion because it has the potential to create low-carbon energy as it only needs [hydrogen as fuel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/energy-corp) and the only by-product is helium.
