The prototype Antares DLR-H2 is the first manned aircraft that can take off using [electric power generated via fuel cell](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydrogen-cartridges). The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has built the machine in partnership with Lange Aviation. The glider has a 20 meter wingspan and uses [hydrogen fuel cells](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tacoma-h2overlander-concept) to generate electricity to power its propeller with an [electric motor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/electric-aircrafts).

Fuel cells generate electricity by cold burning hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is not naturally available but can be extracted from water or petroleum gas. Water extraction is nearly CO2 free when accomplished with wind and solar energy.
