# Unkempt Quirky Seats The Frumpy Chairs by Jamie Wolfond Are Handcrafted Out of Plastic By Meghan Young | Published 2013-01-07 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frumpy-chairs References: [core77](http://www.core77.com/blog/furniture_design/frumpy_chairs_hand-crafted_plastic-molded_seating_by_jamie_wolfond_24118.asp) & [jamiewolfond](http://jamiewolfond.com/_/FRUMPY_CHAIR.html) The Frumpy Chairs have been aptly named. However, instead of being shabby and outdated, these seats are simply unkempt. Since they have been crafted out of [brightly colored materials](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/no-two-alike), with some texture and sparkles to add a little more pizzazz, it is hard to consider the Frumpy Chairs as anything short of playful and quirky--which is far from what the word 'frumpy' entails. Created by Jamie Wolfond, a designer born and raised in Toronto, Canada, the Frumpy Chairs make up a series of [one-of-a-kind designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-eternal-child) made out of [low-density polyethylene plastic](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paul-coenen-1). Currently a senior at the Rhode Island School of Design, Wolfond crafted each seat by hand using fire-proof silicone pattern and some staples. He reveals, "I sought to create an efficient production method that would produce a varied result." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.4/10 - Popularity: 67% | Activity: 28% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Playful and Quirky Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop products with unique and unconventional designs to appeal to consumers seeking playful and quirky aesthetics. - **Handcrafted Artisanal Products:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Capitalize on the growing demand for personalized and handmade items by offering artisanal products that showcase individuality and craftsmanship. - **Sustainable Material Innovation:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore the use of alternative materials, such as low-density polyethylene plastic, to create eco-friendly and innovative products that challenge traditional manufacturing methods. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate unique materials and unconventional designs into furniture production, catering to consumers seeking distinctive and statement-making pieces. - **Art and Design Education:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Integrate hands-on and experimental learning approaches into art and design education to foster creativity and encourage students to explore unconventional materials and manufacturing techniques. - **Eco-friendly Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop sustainable manufacturing processes that utilize alternative materials, reducing environmental impact and promoting the creation of innovative and eco-friendly products. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Playful Toy-Like Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frunchroom-furniture-collection.md) - [Unexpected Boundary-Pushing Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atypical-chair.md) - [Upcycled Plastic Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crafting-plastic.md) - [Upcycled Denim Waste Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fluff-stack-furniture.md) - [Bold Community-Reflected Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-flap-chair.md) - [Chic Norm-Challenging Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wiggle-collection.md) - [Quirky Postmodern Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-ebba-armchair.md) - [Cubic Featherlight Seat Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/please-hold-up-chair.md) - [Chic Recycled Waste Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xox-chair.md)
