[Boeing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/undersea-vehicle) Directed Energy Systems has announced the completion of the Free Electron Laser (FEL) based upon a design by the Navy.

The Free Electron Laser can fire a deadly 100-kilowatt beam at threats both on the surface of the water and in the air. FELs are electrically generated, so they can use the [ship's power](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/electric-boat-model) to provide virtually unlimited ammo with speed-of-light delivery.

The Navy is interested in the Free Electron Laser because FELs have the widest frequency range of any kind of laser, and its intense beams can be tuned to a precise wavelength. Conventional lasers lack this ability.
