# Mud-Powered Lighting The Soil Lamp By Luc Tremblay | Published 2008-11-15 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/free-and-enviromental-light-led-lamp-that-runs-on-mud References: [mariekestaps.nl](http://www.mariekestaps.nl/projects_soillamp.html) This might just be the best [off-grid lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biolite-solar-string-lights) that you will ever need. Mud and a splash of water here and there are all this lamp requires--two things that you can find almost anywhere. The only thing is that I am not sure how it will perform in subzero temperatures. Designer Marieke Staps says, "The [mud is enclosed in various cells](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brick-light). These cells contain [copper and zinc](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/terra-lamp-series) that conduct the electricity." Therefore, the more cells you have, the more and/or brighter the light will be. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.4/10 - Popularity: 6% | Activity: 28% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Off-grid Lighting:** Creating innovative lighting solutions to enable people to live off-grid without sacrificing quality of life. - **Sustainable Energy:** Developing sustainable energy sources as an alternative to traditional energy sources. - **Natural Material Innovation:** Exploring the use of natural materials in technology to create more eco-friendly devices. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Renewable Energy:** Creating new technologies for sustainable energy sources such as solar, wind, and water power. - **Agriculture:** Exploring innovative ways to use soil and natural materials for technological advancement. - **Outdoor and Emergency Equipment:** Designing lighting solutions that work well in outdoor and emergency scenarios such as camping, hiking, and power outages. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sustainable Light Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/geolectric-lantern.md) - [Wireless Solar-Powered Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/solarpowered-lights.md) - [Glowing Power-Free Lamp Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nisshoku.md) - [Vibrant Rechargeable Portable Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pop-lamp.md) - [Sustainable Solar Portable Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iggy-lamp.md) - [Glowing Organic-Waste Sustainable Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lanova-terra.md) - [Flippable Solar Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nomad-3.md) - [Sunlight-Mimicking Panelled Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sunne-lamp.md) - [Light Pollution-Reducing Island Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/island-lamp.md)
