# Drug-Detecting Honeybees These Specially Trained Bees May Be the Latest Form of Airport Security By Katherine Pendrill | Published 2015-06-24 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/form-of-airport-security References: [magazine.good.is](http://magazine.good.is/articles/drug-sniffing-honey-bee) & [plosone.org](http://www.plosone.org/article/Authors/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0128528) New research suggests that specially trained honeybees could soon replace canines as a form of airport security. The study was conducted as a partnership between researchers at the [University in Giessen](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wifi-device-1) and the [German State Office of Criminal Investigation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/novelsweets). Their joint findings ultimately suggest that the Western honeybee could eventually replace drug-sniffing dogs. In the study, the researchers used an electroantennographic device to measure the sensory perception of Western honeybees. They found that these honeybees had a unique ability to sense samples of cocaine and heroin. The researchers then worked to train the honeybees to show a reliable behavioral response in the presence of these particular drugs. The study demonstrated that the trained honeybees could complement or even replace the drug-sniffing dogs currently being used in airports. While these specially trained bees are not being used in airports yet, it is possible that they could be used as a form of airport security in the near future. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.4/10 - Popularity: 24% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Science](https://www.trendhunter.com/science) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Drug-detecting Honeybees:** Specially trained honeybees could potentially revolutionize airport security by replacing drug-sniffing dogs. - **Electroantennographic Sensory Perception:** The development of electroantennographic devices could lead to advancements in sensory perception and detection techniques. - **Animal-driven Security Solutions:** The use of animals, such as honeybees or other trained species, in security protocols could open up new innovative possibilities for various industries. ### Where This Applies - **Airport Security:** The adoption of drug-detecting honeybees could disrupt and enhance the efficiency of airport security systems. - **Biosensing Technologies:** The development of electroantennographic devices could disrupt the biosensing industry by offering new ways to detect substances and enhance security measures. - **Law Enforcement and Investigation:** The use of animal-driven security solutions, like drug-detecting honeybees, could transform the way law enforcement and investigation agencies approach detection and evidence collection. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Multidirectional Miniature Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/multidirectional-miniature-robots.md) - [AI-Powered Beehive Farming Vehicles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2035-moving-beehive-mobility.md) - [Contraband-Detecting Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/narc-robot-concept.md) - [Airport-Assisting Drone Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airport-drone-system.md) - [Fragrant Dog Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-hive-scent-collection.md) - [Canine Sniffing Workshops](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sniff-n-seek.md) - [Miniature Flying Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tiny-robot.md) - [Airport Food Delivery Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/meituan.md) - [Airport Dog Training Initiatives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/assistance-dogs1.md)
