# Floating Ocean Metropolises This Floating City Concept is Entirely Self-Sufficient By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-05-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-city-concept References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/05/13/floating-city-at-design-office/) & [atdesignoffice](http://www.atdesignoffice.com/) AT Design Office have developed a [floating city concept](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-neighborhood) for the Chinese Construction firm CCCC. The island, which spans four square miles, is a promising alternative to ravaging the countryside for real estate space. The design expands upon technologies that CCCC is already using to build a 31-km bridge between Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai. The infrastructure would be made up of [prefabricated hexagonal modules](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drop-pod), and the island would be equipped with [farms, hatcheries and garbage collection systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/living-sphere) in order to sustainably produce food and remove waste. Moreover, recreational green spaces would be provided above and below the water's surface and a cruise dock would be necessary for easy import and export. Speaking of the project, the architects explain that it, "offered an opportunity to develop a new urban nucleus of world-class residential, commercial and cultural facilities, as well as to promote a zero-carbon, energy-efficient and self-sufficient city." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 33% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Floating Urbanization:** The development of entirely self-sufficient, floating cities presents an opportunity for entrepreneurs to explore innovative construction and sustainability techniques. - **Modular Infrastructure:** The use of prefabricated hexagonal modules provides potential for modular building and design, offering a new frontier for construction innovation. - **Sustainable Aquaculture:** The integration of farms and hatcheries in floating islands signifies a need for sustainable aquaculture techniques, introducing potential for advancements in aquatic agriculture. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Construction Industry:** The construction of large-scale, self-sufficient floating cities will require new innovations in materials and building techniques for construction companies to remain relevant. - **Sustainable Agriculture Industry:** The incorporation of farms and hatcheries in floating islands offers the sustainable agriculture industry the chance to introduce new technologies and advancements to meet the industry's growing needs. - **Tourism Industry:** The integration of recreational green spaces and a cruise dock presents opportunities for tourism industry professionals looking to explore new, unique vacation experiences in self-sufficient floating cities. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Floating City Networks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/justinian-khoo.md) - [Recycled Plastic Floating Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mast.md) - [Aquatic Floating Farms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-marine-farm.md) - [Upcoming Architectural Floating Parks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/centroparco.md) - [Biodiverse Floating Housing Developments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-neighborhood.md) - [Turtle-Shaped Floating City Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/terayacht.md) - [Floating Marine Park Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smrket.md) - [Flax Fiber Floating Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blue-nomad.md) - [Bridge-Defining Tranquil Cities](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mindfulness-city.md)
