# Pixelated Home Extensions DKO Architects Builds Floating Boxes on Top of Old Architecture By Meghan Young | Published 2016-04-21 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-box References: [swipelife](http://swipelife.com/2016/04/dko-architects-floating-box-to-residences-in-australia/) & [dko.au](http://www.dko.com.au/) Home extensions can be tricky for a number of reasons, but it appears that one architecture firm has got it right with a series of floating boxes. Recently commissioned to create unique additions to the facade of residences located in Melbourne, Australia, DKO Architects decided to meld the old with the new in a very [artistic and sculptural way](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-with-an-inverted-roof). The floating boxes used for the Melbourne homes have a pixelated aesthetic that make them appear to be more like art installations than anything else. Interestingly, the pixelated pattern was actually inspired by the pattern spotted on a church that’s nearby rather than anything more technological. Although the floating box looks dark, inside a lot of natural light manages to seep in. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 74% | Activity: 61% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Pixelated Architecture:** Opportunity for architects to incorporate pixelated designs in building extensions to create visually stunning structures. - **Blending Old and New:** Opportunity to marry old architecture with modern design in home extensions for a unique and artistic aesthetic. - **Artistic Home Additions:** Opportunity to transform home extensions into art installations, creating a visually striking and creative living space. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Architects can explore pixelated designs and innovative ways to combine old and new architecture in their projects. - **Construction:** Construction firms can specialize in building unique and artistic home extensions that incorporate floating box designs. - **Art and Design:** Artists and designers can explore the concept of turning home extensions into art installations by incorporating pixelated aesthetics. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Retro Geometric Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/octagon-house.md) - [Curved Vintage Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drpa.md) - [Italian-Informed Loft Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lewisham-loggias.md) - [Illuminated Curved Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cereus-house.md) - [Textured Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/basalt-house.md) - [Charred Timber Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grotto-studio.md) - [Spacially Contrasting Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barwon-heads-house.md) - [Concrete Modern Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/t-house-extension.md) - [Craftsmanship-Based Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ray-house-extension.md)
