# Wall-Supported Seating The Flip Chair by John Caswell is Convertible But Needs a Place to Lean By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-12-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flip-chair-by-john-caswell References: [johncaswelldesign](http://www.johncaswelldesign.co.uk/flip.html) The Flip Chair by John Caswell is a piece of furniture that relies on the architecture of its surroundings in order to function. Without a wall for support, the object would not stand up straight and it would therefore be essentially useless. But the word reliant is not the best description of this clever perch, for it has been designed with an element of [versatility](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chameleon-furniture). Take a look beneath the seat of the [leaning chaise](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leandesk) and you'll noticed another [white cushion](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/perron-pillo-lounge-chair). This odd object can be flipped upside-down and used as a chair in one of two orientations. What's useful about this is that the components that act as both backrest and front legs have been made to different heights. The Flip Chair by John Caswell can accommodate sitters of the short and tall varieties. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 56% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Wall-supported Seating:** Furniture that depends on the architecture of its surroundings for support can lead to innovations in space-saving design. - **Convertible Furniture:** Designs that transform into multiple functional pieces can lead to new opportunities in the home decor market. - **Flexible Design:** Furniture designs that allow for multiple configurations and user customization can lead to greater customer satisfaction and innovation opportunities. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** The Flip Chair by John Caswell demonstrates the potential for versatile space-saving designs that can appeal to small apartment dwellers and people living in urban environments. - **Home Decor:** Innovations in convertible and multifunctional furniture can create new opportunities for companies in the home decor industry to meet the needs of consumers in small living spaces. - **Architectural Design:** Designing furniture that is dependent on the architecture of the surrounding environment can encourage architects to integrate multi-functional furniture into their designs, leading to creative and efficient use of space. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Modular Upholstered Bright Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flipster.md) - [Transforming Child Stool Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flipflap-childrens-chair.md) - [Naturalistic Grass-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-flip-chair.md) - [Hybrid Sit-Stand Furniture Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lean-on-chair-concept.md) - [Sliding Flatpack Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folio-chair.md) - [Adjustable Position Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/switch2-chair.md) - [Ultra-Simple Multifunctional Furniture Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chairpf.md) - [Multi-Position Beanbag Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/revolve-chair.md) - [Legless Floor Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-bold-chair.md)
