# Model Airplane-Inspired Lights The Flight Lamp by Calen Knauf is Sleek and Lightweight By Meghan Young | Published 2013-01-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flight-lamp References: [fastcodesign](http://www.fastcodesign.com/1671547/kickstarting-a-flat-pack-lamp-inspired-by-model-airplanes) & [knaufandbrown](http://knaufandbrown.com/) The result of an interesting challenge set by a professor, the Flight Lamp is a sleek design that pleases both visually and practically. The parameters were strict: create something using [aircraft ply](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cygnet-light), incorporating tension in its construction and [flat-packs into an envelope](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/allen-key-lamp). Calen Knauf, an industrial design student based in Vancouver, met the challenge with ease. He created a sturdy yet lightweight fixture that met all three criteria. Weighing no more than 1.5 pounds, the Flight Lamp was inspired by traditional balsa-wood airplane kits. Set at a [cantilevered angle](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ori-lamp), the Flight Lamp's shade curves to create a protective embrace around the bulb. Supported on two copper legs, the Flight Lamp comes in two different colorways: all black except for the base as well as mint and pale wood. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 30% | Activity: 14% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Balsa-wood-inspired Designs:** Designing products using the lightweight and sturdy qualities of balsa wood to create sleek and practical solutions. - **Flat-pack Envelope Designs:** Developing products that can be easily packaged into envelopes through innovative tension construction and material selection. - **Copper Accent Lighting:** Incorporating copper accents in lighting fixtures to add visual appeal and a trendy aesthetic. ### Who This Affects Most - **Industrial Design:** Exploring new ways to use balsa wood and tension construction techniques in the design of lightweight and compact consumer products. - **Packaging:** Creating innovative packaging solutions that can accommodate flat-pack designs for improved transportation and eco-friendly shipping. - **Lighting:** Integrating copper accents and unique shade designs into lighting fixtures to offer a modern and stylish lighting option for consumers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Folded Timber Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flatpack-timber-lamp.md) - [Sculptural Wooden Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arc-lamp.md) - [Organic Paper-Like Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/farolito.md) - [Kinetic Insect Sculpture Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dragonfly-balance-light.md) - [Industrial Contemporary Lighting Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shop-light.md) - [Air Balloon-Inspired Lamp Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-balloon-lamp.md) - [Ecological Dual Lampshade Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-light.md) - [Eclipse-Inspired Whimsical Pendant Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/space-traveler.md) - [Customizable Minimal Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-delta-lamp.md)
