# Massive Magnifying Telescopes The Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Telescope is Mind-Blowing By Jamie Danielle Munro | Published 2011-06-17 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/five-hundred-meter-aperture-spherical-telescope References: [popsci](http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-06/inside-fast-soon-be-worlds-biggest-and-baddest-radio-telescope) & [gizmodo](http://gizmodo.com/5812522/worlds-largest-radio-telescope-being-built-in-china-hopefully-not-for-evil) For anyone who has ever watched a James Bond film, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope being built in China may cause some concerns. However, as long as fiction remains on the big screen, this [technological invention](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/advanced-telescope-design) will open new doors in the world of science. The five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, also known as FAST, can magnify the sky three times as far as Arecibo. Because of the incredible size of the dish, scientists will also have access to a [wider sections of the sky](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dark-matter-map) allowing them to uncover information that has previously gone unnoticed. The completion of the design is set for 2016, so if there are any chances of Bond-like activity there is plenty of time to investigate suspicious happenings. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 14% | Activity: 30% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Science](https://www.trendhunter.com/science) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Giant Telescopes:** Developing large telescopes can magnify the sky helping scientists discover new information. - **Improved Astronomy:** Advancements in astronomy can pave way for enhanced understanding of the universe. - **Astrophysics Research:** Astrophysicists can conduct more in-depth research using advanced telescopes such as FAST. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Aerospace and Defense:** Development of large telescopes can have implications in the aerospace and defense industry in areas such as satellite surveillance. - **Scientific Research:** Improved telescopes can aid in scientific research in industries such as astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology. - **Education:** Learning opportunities in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics can be made more exciting and engaging with the use of large telescopes. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [4K Smart Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/4k-smart-telescopes.md) - [Smart Personal Observatory Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vaonis-hyperia.md) - [Automated Algorithm-Powered Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-space-telescope.md) - [Intelligent Connected Telescope Models](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/decouvir-telescope.md) - [Rooftop-Mounted Space Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/celestron-origin.md) - [AI-Powered Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/finder-tw2.md) - [Intelligent 4K Smart Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seestar-s30-pro.md) - [Hyper High-Resolution Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hyper-highresolution-camera.md) - [App-Controlled Smart Telescopes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/evscope-equinox-2.md)
