# Compressive Fire Starters The Fire Piston Embraces Boyle's Law and Creates Flames By Meghan Young | Published 2010-05-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fire-piston References: [ohgizmo](http://www.ohgizmo.com/2010/05/05/fire-piston-produces-a-flame-with-nothing-but-compressed-air/) & [survivalschool](http://www.survivalschool.com/products/fire_starting/Fire_Piston_Classroom_Demo_Unit.htm) If you are as unfamiliar with Boyle's Law as I was, it essentially dictates that compressed air in a small container can increase temperature to the point of combustion; this is the law that the Fire Piston abides by. Forget fuel, wood or whatever else you would traditionally make a fire with, conjuring it out of thin air is much cooler. This particular Fire Piston may seem expensive at $50, but it will never have to be replaced nor refueled. Equipped with an aluminum rod and encased in acrylic glass, this version is made for science demonstrations. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.6/10 - Popularity: 45% | Activity: 55% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Compressed Air Technology:** Exploring the use of compressed air in various industries to create innovative solutions. - **Sustainable Fire Starting:** Developing environmentally friendly and long-lasting fire starters that eliminate the need for traditional fuel sources. - **Alternative Combustion Methods:** Exploring unconventional ways to generate heat and flames without relying on traditional materials and methods. ### Who This Affects Most - **Outdoor Recreation:** Creating innovative fire-starting solutions for camping, survival, and outdoor activities. - **Science Education:** Developing educational tools and demonstrations that showcase scientific principles, such as Boyle's Law, in a practical and engaging way. - **Emergency Preparedness:** Providing reliable and sustainable fire-starting methods for emergency situations, where traditional fuel sources may be limited or unavailable. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Fire Pit Starter Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biolite-firepit-essentials-kit.md) - [Portable Smokeless Fire Pits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bondstove-fire-pit.md) - [Convenient Personal Fireplaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/personal-fireplace1.md) - [Breath-Activated Flameless Lighters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clean-torch.md) - [Gas-Powered Campfire Cans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lavabox.md) - [Portable Propane-Powered Fire Pits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tailgater-x-portable-fire-pit.md) - [Smoke-Free Fire Pits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-smokeless-fire-pit.md) - [Collapsible Propane Fire Pits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/live-outdoor-firestorm.md) - [Collapsible Smokeless Fire Pits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-smokeless-fire-pit.md)
