The 24-inch-tall shelving unit replicates big city fire escapes that are usually found on the sides of older apartment buildings. Those who live in those buildings, which are commonly found in New York City, know that it is actually frowned upon -- and sometimes illegal -- to place objects like potted plants on the outdoor staircases. However, they have free-range if they buy these miniature versions. With three shelves that have great depths, there’s ample room for books, knick-knacks, photographs and even some [smaller potted plants](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/trader-joes-mini-can-foliage). They are a well-suited gift for anyone who likes to steer clear from the norm or a quirky gift for [first-time apartment owners](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/apt-drawers). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.0/10 - Popularity: 81% | Activity: 60% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Home](https://www.trendhunter.com/home) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Miniature Home Decor:** The trend of miniature home decor offers opportunities for innovators to create unique and quirky gift options. - **Replicating Urban Features:** The trend of replicating urban features in home decor presents opportunities to create conversation-starter pieces. - **Creative Storage Solutions:** The trend of creative storage solutions opens up possibilities for innovative shelving designs that are both functional and decorative. ### Where This Applies - **Home Decor:** The home decor industry can explore and capitalize on the trend of miniature home decor. - **Furniture Design:** The furniture design industry has the potential for disruption by creating unique pieces that replicate urban features. - **Interior Design:** The interior design industry can tap into the trend of creative storage solutions to provide innovative and space-saving options for clients. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Handle-Equipped Planter Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-plant-shelf.md) - [Discreet Folding Shelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-shelf.md) - [Parisian Building-Inspired Bookends](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paris-bookend.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [L-Shaped Stacked Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loft-shelf.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Living Storage Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/treevive.md) - [Mounted Colorful Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ledge-shelf.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md)
