# Macabre Monochromatic Prints These Fionn McCabe Illustrations are Dark By Josh Triantafilou | Published 2012-03-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fionn-mccabe References: [booooooom](http://www.booooooom.com/2012/03/27/drawings-by-artist-fionn-mccabe/) & [fionnmccabe](http://www.fionnmccabe.com/2011.html) Artist Fionn McCabe has produced a series of works that combine the [spookiness of a horror film](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-scent-of-a-nightmare) with the graphic appeal of a comic book. The illustrations are all rendered in black and white. This [monochromatic color scheme](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/greyscale-gelato) brings the scenes and figures Fionn McCabe depicts into sharp relief. There is a sense of vividness to the works that is strangely lost when one views more realistic styles of visual art. This may be because the scenes portrayed by Fionn McCabe are so out there that one is encouraged to suspend disbelief. The illustrations may be macabre but they are also [whimsical](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alices-adventures-collection). Indeed, these are the works of a lush imagination. This point should not be lost. Illustration is an art form that, if properly executed by the artist, gives almost free reign to creativity. Fion McCabe illustrates this point. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 19% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Monochromatic Horror Art:** A trend of artists creating horror-themed illustrations in black and white with a graphic novel feel. - **Whimsical Macabre Art:** A trend of artists creating playful yet spooky illustrations that depict scenes from horror films. - **Fantastical Illustration:** A trend of artists using their imagination to create visually stunning illustrations. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Design:** A disruptive opportunity for artists to create more unique, attention-grabbing artwork for the horror genre. - **Publishing:** A disruptive opportunity for publishers to explore new types of books and graphic novels within the horror genre. - **Film and Television:** A disruptive opportunity to develop horror films and TV shows with a unique, visually impactful style. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Limited Humorous Art Prints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/david-shrigley-1.md) - [Monochromatic Ghost Character Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monochromatic-ghost-character-sculptures.md) - [Horrific Beer-Themed Comics](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garage-beer.md) - [Contrasting Artful Furniture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fluro-furniture.md) - [Archival Pigment Art Print](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/parallax.md) - [Artful Suspended Fashion Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/invisible-figures.md) - [Dark Abstracted Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-minyades-exhibition.md) - [Artistic Rum Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/artists-of-the-abyss.md) - [Striking Urban Wildlife Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clare-allin.md)
