# Sweet Finned Stools The Toco Stool Stands on a Sturdy Structure of Overlapping Rounded Legs By Amelia Roblin | Published 2015-01-16 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/finned-stool References: [leibal](http://leibal.com/furniture/toco-stool/) & [futatsumata](http://www.futatsumata.com/en/projects/index.html) The most basic of objects foster opportunities for designers to get creative, and the finned stool embodies this idea with a truly delightful look. When you break it down, the piece of furniture comprises the typical [four legs and a flat seat](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sedeo-chair); however, the execution of this item is quite different to most. Instead of cutting posts to serve as the supportive structure of this petite perch, the [Koichi Futatsumata Studio](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sand-chair) cut each of the wooden components to have two flat edges and one arched one. To assemble the backless chair, the four buttresses were fixed together in a pinwheel arrangement, attaching to the round-cornered square that serves as a comfy seat. The resultant form of this finned stool seems to resemble the beak of a Toco Toucan, giving the lovely teal blue object its name. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.4/10 - Popularity: 80% | Activity: 43% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Creative Furniture Design:** Opportunities for designers to create unique and visually appealing furniture through unconventional structures and shapes. - **Non-traditional Construction Methods:** Exploration of new techniques to construct furniture using alternative materials and shapes. - **Inspired by Nature:** Furniture design inspired by nature, particularly animals, for a visually striking aesthetic. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** Innovative furniture design that sets itself apart through unique and unconventional shapes and materials. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating visually striking furniture in interior design to create a unique and memorable space - **Home Decor:** Offering unique and eye-catching furniture pieces for consumers to add personality and style to their homes. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Visibly Undulating Stool Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/concave-stool.md) - [Interlocking Wooden Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-tie-stool.md) - [Bright Colorful Structural Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fels.md) - [Bubble-Inspired Bulbous Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bubble-stool.md) - [Alien-Inspired Metal Stool Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/metal-stool-1.md) - [Sculptural Monochromatic Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monochromatic-stool.md) - [Sustainable Biophilic Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/inspired-by-nature.md) - [Multifaceted Geometric Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stackable-stools.md) - [Stackable Cork-Like Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drum-stool-1.md)
