# Negative Lighting Marcovici Makes Lampshades From Old Slides, Negatives and Reels By Cowbag | Published 2009-02-15 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/filmic-slide-lighting-unusual-use-of-old-imagery References: [blog.makezine](http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/02/lamps_made_from_slides_and_film.html) & [sites.google](http://sites.google.com/site/artmarcovici/lights) This is one of the best uses I have seen for old lamps and slides for a while. These pieces are from artist Michael Marcovici and the slide ones in particular are really striking. What a refreshing use for old slides: The film shade is from “Apollo 13,” a detail which make me desires it even more, but I still love the cubic brilliance of the slide light best. **Implications** - In today's society, there is a large group of consumers who find it very appealing when old and unused products are transformed into something updated and beautiful. Not only do such products complement a green lifestyle, but they also satisfy the high demand amongst consumers for products that boast retro or vintage qualities and characteristics. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.9/10 - Popularity: 37% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Upcycled Lighting:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Exploring creative ways to repurpose old materials like slides and negatives into unique and eco-friendly lighting fixtures. - **Retro-inspired Home Decor:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Capitalizing on the demand for products that combine modern functionality with nostalgic aesthetics, such as lampshades made from vintage film slides. - **Sustainable Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Catering to environmentally-conscious consumers by designing products that utilize recycled or upcycled materials, enabling a more sustainable and responsible lifestyle. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporating unique and eco-friendly lighting solutions, like lampshades made from old slides and negatives, into interior design projects to offer clients one-of-a-kind, sustainable spaces. - **Art and Craft:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Encouraging artists and crafters to explore new techniques and materials, such as repurposing old film slides, to create innovative and visually captivating pieces with a retro twist. - **Sustainable Home Goods:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Tapping into the growing market for sustainable and eco-friendly home decor by offering products like lampshades made from recycled film slides and negatives. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Recycled Lighting Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nytt-lys-collection.md) - [Discarded Theater Screen Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/discarded-theater-screen.md) - [Cinema Screen Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cinema-screen-lamp.md) - [Ecological Dual Lampshade Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-light.md) - [3D-Printed Reversed Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/revolve-lamp.md) - [Lighting-Restoring Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vintage-lighting.md) - [Pencil Shaving-Inspired Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sharpener-lampshades.md) - [Vintage Projector Puzzle Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magic-lantern.md) - [Recycled Paper Pulp Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-lamp1.md)
