# Math-Inspired Furniture The Fibonacci Cabinet Modernizes the Traditional Chinese Medicine Cabinet By Meghan Young | Published 2012-10-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fibonacci-cabinet References: [neatorama](http://www.neatorama.com/2012/10/27/Fibonacci-Cabinet/) & [utopiadesign.cn](http://www.utopiadesign.cn/en/FibonacciCabinet.html) The Fibonacci Cabinet is named after the Fibonacci sequence, which always begins with 0 and 1, and each subsequent number being the sum of the previous two. This results in drawers of varying sizes, all of which can be pieced together like a [three dimensional puzzle](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/puzzle-shelf) to form a single rectangular form. Nevertheless, the beauty of the Fibonacci Cabinet is that it can remain altogether or split up to serve different purposes. Designed by China-based design studio Utopia, the Fibonacci Cabinet is also inspired by the [traditional Chinese medicine cabinet](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tuff-pencil-cabinet), Guangzhou. By changing up the sizes of the drawers, however, the Guangzhou has been given a subtle modern and [modular makeover](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loopo-system) that will appeal to many. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.7/10 - Popularity: 87% | Activity: 76% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Math-inspired Furniture:** Designing furniture using mathematical concepts can lead to unique and functional pieces. - **Modular Furniture:** Furniture pieces that can be easily assembled, disassembled and reconfigured offers flexibility and convenience in different settings. - **Cultural Fusion Design:** Combining traditional designs with modern concepts can create hybrid designs that appeal to a broader market. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** The emergence of math-inspired furniture offers opportunities for designers to create innovative and functional pieces that cater to the modern lifestyle. - **Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry:** By incorporating the traditional Chinese medicine cabinet design into modern furniture, the industry can offer new and unique products. - **Architectural and Interior Design Industry:** The move towards modular furniture design offers opportunities for interior designers to create flexible living spaces and efficient use of small apartments and offices. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Modular Configured Office Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabinet.md) - [Tropical Island-Inspired Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/weaver-cabinet.md) - [Modular Storage Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-storage-cabinet.md) - [Maternal-Themed Sculptural Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mother-and-child.md) - [Minimal Four-Legged Wooden Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/exposure-cabinet.md) - [Sandbox-Like Modular Storage Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-storage-cabinet1.md) - [Cabinet-Concealed Modern Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/obelisk-3.md) - [Japanese-Inspired Cabinet Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/veil-cabinets.md) - [Thoughtful Wheeling Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabinet-on-wheels.md)
