# Surreal Atlas Artistry (UPDATE) Fernando Vicente Illustrates Human Portraits Using Old Maps By Jason Soy | Published 2011-12-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fernando-vicente1 References: [urhajos.tumblr](http://urhajos.tumblr.com/post/13595854623/fernando-vicente#notes) & [fernandovicenteatlas.blogspot](http://fernandovicenteatlas.blogspot.com/) Fernando Vicente is once again using his mastery of anatomical drawing in an innovative way. Using [old maps as canvases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vector-maps), the Madrid-based artist illustrates [surreal portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glass-portraits) integrating landmasses into each expertly crafted piece. For instance, in the Fernando Vicente illustration of Africa, the Spanish artist converts the continent into a skull with pieces of the cranium seemingly shattered and floating away. The bits that are broken off are, of course, parts of Europe and Asia, but it's simply amazing to see Vicente synthesizing such an image without compromising the accuracy of topography. Fernando Vicente's illustrative style is highly evocative of Leonardo da Vinci's [anatomical drawings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shiyuan-xu), and when you couple this with the old look of his chosen map canvases, the images seem as though they were produced in a different century altogether. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.5/10 - Popularity: 74% | Activity: 82% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Anatomical Map Artistry:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore the use of maps as a unique canvas for anatomical illustrations, creating visually stunning and thought-provoking art pieces. - **Surreal Portrait Integration:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Experiment with integrating different objects or elements into traditional portraits, adding a surreal and imaginative twist to artistic expressions. - **Historical Aesthetics:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Combine old and vintage aesthetics with contemporary art techniques and mediums, creating artwork that evokes a sense of nostalgia and historical significance. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art and Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new possibilities and mediums for artistic expression, pushing the boundaries of traditional art techniques and inspiring new trends in the art industry. - **Creative Advertising:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Utilize unique and visually striking artworks in advertising campaigns, creating memorable and impactful marketing materials that grab attention and leave a lasting impression. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate visually captivating and conceptually rich art pieces into interior design projects, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of spaces and creating engaging environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Oil Painting-Inspired Rugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/antonio-santn.md) - [Laser-Cut Urban Artistry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laser-cut-city-maps.md) - [AI-Generated Real-World Transformations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-generated-world.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Traveling Fine Art Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/get-out-there.md) - [Striking Glass Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glass-portraits.md) - [Tiled Restaurant Interior Murals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cozinha-das-flores.md)
